Transformation, memory and awarenes
The shadow line is the boundary that, once crossed, marks a transformation from which there is no turning back. It is the threshold between who we are and who we are becoming.
From this image, drawn from Joseph Conrad’s novel of the same name, comes The Shadow Line, the quintet project by saxophonist and composer Gianni Denitto.
Shadow lines do not belong only to the artist’s biography. They are passages that concern everyone: a choice, a loss, an encounter, a love that begins or ends, a new responsibility. The project begins with personal experience and builds a narrative in which every listener can recognise part of their own path
The Concert
The presence of younger musicians reflects the project’s focus on growth and transformation, bringing different generations, energies and perspectives into the same sound.
The concert centres on the five pieces from The Shadow Line, exploring memory, inner conflict, resilience and gratitude, alongside Sarajevo and Suresh, linked to outward journeys and cultural encounters.
The quintet — alto saxophone, trumpet, trombone, bass and drums — has no continuous harmonic instrument. This creates an open, exposed sound in which composition and improvisation shape a collective narrative.
Please note: For performances outside Italy, the project can involve young local musicians
After two albums devoted to travel and encounters with other cultures, Gianni Denitto turns his attention towards a more intimate territory. Music becomes an inner journey shaped through composition, improvisation and timbral research.
Released by Isulafactory, The Shadow Line was later expanded with three electronic reinterpretations developed from the earliest solo recordings.
